Q: How can we stay safe and cool when the summer is sizzling?

A: Summer across the Berks-Chester County and the surrounding region offers endless opportunities to enjoy the outdoors—from hiking trails in French Creek State Park to community festivals, backyard gardening, and youth sports. But with rising temperatures and high humidity, it's important to be aware of the risks of heat-related illnesses, especially heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Heat exhaustion occurs when your body loses too much water and salt through sweating. Symptoms can include heavy sweating, dizziness, weakness, nausea, and a rapid heartbeat. If left untreated, it can progress to heatstroke—a medical emergency marked by confusion, a high body temperature (above 103°F), dry or flushed skin, and even unconsciousness.

To prevent these conditions, stay well hydrated, especially if you’re spending time outdoors. Drink water regularly—even before you feel thirsty—and take frequent breaks in the shade or in air-conditioned spaces.

Dress appropriately by wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses offer extra protection from the sun. If you're working or exercising outside, pace yourself and rest often, particularly during the hottest part of the day (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

Children, older adults, and people with chronic health conditions are especially vulnerable to heat-related illness. And remember: never leave anyone—children or pets—in a parked car, even for a short time.

If someone shows signs of heat exhaustion, move them to a cooler place, loosen clothing, and give water. If symptoms worsen or signs of heatstroke appear, call 911 immediately.

With a few simple precautions, you can safely enjoy all that our region has to offer this summer. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay safe!
